Corbett National Park, officially known as Jim Corbett National Park, is India’s oldest national park and a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, northern India. Here’s an overview:

Basic Facts

 

  • Established: 1936 as Hailey National Park; renamed after Jim Corbett, a famous British-Indian hunter turned conservationist.

  • Area: Approximately 520 sq. km.

  • Geography: Mixture of hills, riverine belts, marshy depressions, grasslands, and a large lake.

  • Elevation: Ranges from 400 to 1,200 meters (1,300 to 3,900 ft).

    • Bengal Tiger (key species)

Tourism & Zones

The park is divided into 6 major zones open to tourists:

  1. Dhikala Zone – Most popular, ideal for tiger sightings

  2. Bijrani Zone – Rich in biodiversity, scenic landscapes

  3. Jhirna Zone – Open all year, good for wildlife

  4. Dhela Zone – Newer zone, fewer crowds

  5. Durga Devi Zone – Best for birdwatchers

  6. Sitabani Buffer Zone – Technically outside the core area, but rich in wildlife

 

Safari options include jeep safari and canter safari.
